The calamities (floods, earthquakes, droughts, epidemics, etc), that wreak havoc and cause tremendous pain to mankind, at times is a wakeup call for the rest of the population that is still breathing

Amidst the current pandemic, quarantined inside the grey coated walls of my room, with very little access to the outside world, I turned my computer on and started scrolling through the archives. A picture on the screen caught my attention causing my heart to pound harder- almost to an audible beat. The dreadful picture from the Syrian massacre- depicting a big hall with hundreds of men, women, and children lying lifeless, wrapped in a white cloth, painted red with innocent blood- a horrid reminder of human barbarity as it stood gazing at me from the computer screen. .

Power and wealth has intoxicated humans since times immemorial and in order to acquire them, humans have a dirty history of wiping out the existence of their fellow human beings.  These crimes are being committed against the people who have done no wrong to the perpetrators. These poor souls are paying the price for something they are not even completely aware about. These mass murders and other disgraceful crimes by the nations drunk on power are not confined to Syria alone, millions of people have lost their lives across the borders and millions have been expelled from their homelands especially in the Muslim majority nations including Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Kashmir, Burma, East Turkestan and other places at the hands of blood thirsty and power hungry nations.

If the gloomy sight of mass graves of their own people does not break the shackles of their ego that is holding their necks high in arrogance and does not make them reflect over their grave crimes in the lands that they have occupied, these rulers along with their entire populations are destined for something catastrophic

Since past some weeks, television screens have been flashing images of death again but this time the images are not coming from the hapless nations but from the superpowers of the world. This sight too is very painful causing extreme grief to a conscious soul. These deaths- on such a large scale, not caused by human bombing but a natural calamity- makes one think about whether it’s God avenging the blood of the innocents.  Pandemic- CoVID-19- has encompassed the entire globe with its epicenter in Wuhan, a city in China, and claimed as many as 240,000 lives with the US having the highest number of deaths followed by Spain and Italy. The entire world has been put under lockdown, restricting masses to the four walls and imposing outright prohibition on social, religious, and economic activities at the hands of respective state governments aiming to halt the spread of this deadly virus. The lockdown on one hand is a savior but on the other hand it has set up many challenges for masses such as fear, hunger, depression, and unemployment.

The calamity in the shape of this minute organism has introduced mankind to an acute pain. The pain that is worst of all is the pain of losing a beloved. The pain that Syrians, Palestinians, Afghans, Yemenis, and Kashmiris have been enduring since decades. The calamities (floods, earthquakes, droughts, epidemics, etc), that wreak havoc and cause tremendous pain to mankind, at times is a wakeup call for the rest of the population that is still breathing. C.S Lewis writes in his book, The problem of pain, “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world’’. According to the great writer, Almighty has His own ways of waking the conscience of people who are absolutely heedless, His instruments are many, pain being the loudest.

If the gloomy sight of mass graves of their own people does not break the shackles of their ego that is holding their necks high in arrogance and does not make them reflect over their grave crimes in the lands that they have occupied, these rulers along with their entire populations are destined for something catastrophic. Looking back at the history we come across the reign of a ruler who claimed sovereignty to the extent that he called himself the god of mankind. He did whatever pleased him: killed innocents, punished sinless, tortured women, butchered children, and enslaved an entire population. When his sins surpassed the threshold, Almighty sent one of His greatest messengers towards him with the divine message, which he rejected and continued in his rebellion against the Lord and continued oppressing masses. Few years later, Allah’s wrath appeared as an entire ocean was cleft into two, engulfing him along with his people who helped him in his dictatorship and till the Day of Judgment, his body is preserved as a reminder for the people who walk the road that he traversed.

(10:90) “And We led the Children of Israel across the sea. Then Pharaoh and his hosts pursued them in iniquity and transgression until Pharaoh cried out while he was drowning: ‘I believe that there is no god but Allah in Whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am also one of those who submit to Allah”.

Bottom line: The only way to live is to let others live peacefully and those who let others live are the only people living, rest are more dead than alive.
