Kashmir University students hold protests and candle-light vigil against rape and murder of Aasifa Bano

Srinagar, 16 April: Students from University of Kashmir, staged a strong protest against the vicious rape and murder of Aasifa Bani.

Students from the boys hostels, viz. MA, MAK marched towards the Gani Kashmiri research scholars hostel where female students of Habba Khatoon, Rabia Basri, Quratul Ain Haider and Bibi Aimina hostel had assembled for the candle light sit in against the rape and murder of Aasifa.

After that a sit in was held at Geelani Square Iqbal Library lawn. Students were carrying placards which read “Sexual violence, Indians weapon of War”, “Asifa Hum Sharminda Hai Tare Qatil Zinda Hai”, “The Rape Public of India”, “Punish  the Culprits”, “I Am Kashmir, I am crushed!”, “Aasifa Our daughter Your Victim Right to Self Determination.”

Also one of the pictures of protest got viral on social media networking sites holded by a small girl which read, “Tumhari Jumhooriyat Ka Janaza Nikal Raha Hai” (There is a funeral of your democracy). These words were said to Police by Syed Ali Geelani, Hurriyat (G) Chairman to policemen who had put him under house arrest and were not opening the entrance gate of his residence.

While speaking to our reporter a student said, “This incident was a preplanned rather diliberate act to terrify the Gujjar community and now it has been highly politicised.” Student further said that they demand justice for Aasifa but at the same time they do not expect justice from Occupier. “Justice has become mockery here now. We know what happened to the cases like Kunnan Poshpora, Aasiya Nelofar etc.”, another protesting student said.

This is believed to be a first massive protest in which majority of the girls participated.

Students raised slogans like, “Aasifa Ka Qatilu Ko Fansi Do”, “Aasifa Hum Shirminda hai Tumharai Qatil Zinda Hai.” Meanwhile pro Pakistan, pro Islam, pro freedom and anti India slogans were also raised by students. 

Students demanded capital punishment to be given to the accused. Before leaving the spot some girls with tearful eyes said how horrible is it that so called preachers of Hindutva have used the temple for this barbaric act. They also shamed the community of Kathua for holding a march under Hindu Ekta Munch in support of rape accused.

Finally, while chanting slogans protest dispersed peacefully.
